It seems like only yesterday that Dr. Catherall picked Burce and myself up at the Salt Lake City Airport for our first view of what was to become a monumental project 'at Thanksgiving Point. We arrived on the site early on the Saturday before Easter in 1999, with overcast skies, freezing temperatures, a sea of mud and rocks on a barren hillside miles from the closest trees. With the snow blowing in our eyes it was hard to imagine that this was to become the Largest Garden Railroad in the United States.

From that humble beginning the railroad forged ahead with almost unbelievable progress thanks to the efforts of Dr. Tom Catherall, Bruce Alger, and the many volunteers of the Utah Garden Railway Society and student volunteers from the engineering department at Brigham Young University.

While the mountain and the railroad were growingthe staff at Thanksgiving Point was busy planting a new forest of trees snd shrubery.
