Alice and I were at Thanksgiving Point the week leading up to the Grand Opening. We helped all the volunteers put some last minute finishing touches on this beautiful railroad. It had over a mile of Stainless Steel Track and one thousand feet of trestles. There was a mountain, hundreds of miniature buildings, and much more. Although this railroad has faded away into history you can still see the construction progress from one of these links here on the H&R Web Site.

There were still many challenges ahead for this huge Railroad. The weather and the very ground on which the railroad was built were not easy to conquer. The new management of Thanksgiving Point was apparently not up to the challenge and closed the railroad a few months after the Grand Opening.

Wolfgang Richter (The founder of LGB) once told me that the best advise he had for someone who wanted to build a Garden Railroad was to "Start small and gradually build as your time, energy, and finances allow". This is still very good advice and we at H&R Trains highly recommend it.
